Public bug reported: For a CD less install, I downloaded vmlinuz and initrd.gz from ftp://mirrors.kernel.org/ubuntu/dists/oneiric/main/installer-amd64/current/images/hd-media/
I got the amd64 iso image from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/ubuntustudio/releases/11.10/release/ and the checksums match The install is able to mount the iso image after booting.
