I will take a look of ramfs.  My gut feeling is that it is probably
not very useful.
IMHO: on the contrary,
a very useful strategy is to copy the important files (while, or directly after booting) into a (init-)ramfs from a (serial) FLASH (where they linger in compressed form, via the boot strategy or JFFS2) into the (nowadays cheap, dynamic) RAM.
