Could you be sure no Xon / Xoff like protocol is active? I do not know the coldfire, but I suppose that this not properly an HW problem. Did you try to write a very simple program writing continuosly a sting of char over the serrial console and looking at its behaviour? In the way you should investigate also the IRQ line as suggestied Len Sorensen
