While "embedded Linux" used to mean "CPU without MMU", nowadays many embedded systems are designed with MMUs, so one of the main difference between desktop and "embedded" user land applications gets less important.

OTOH, most embedded systems feature some hardware and driver dependencies that are not available on a PC. here sometimes simulation might help.
