I have a set of plugins going that allows rasters to be loaded and displayed on screen. The performance is not surprisingly quite satisfying. Currently it is limited to displaying in WGS 84 only and the install is not yet user friendly so the plugins are not available publicly. The biggest problem so far is that only the plugin is linux specific. I am working on breaking out platform dependent fragments, similar to how SWT works.
