Sounds like an older version of uDig. Although the 1.1M* series is
not completely bug-cleaned, the rendering subsystem is much improved
on the 1.0.X series, so do give it a try on your shape data.
Robbie is using 1.1M5 at least.
This should be standard functionality and should work at the end of
the 1.1M series, I think, but I am partly guessing about your desired
use case, so a better idea of what you are doing with these
linestrings is handy.
The goal is to enable the user to select certain road links (not just
one or two, but a fairly significant number across a county), and tag
some of them as 'special' in a variety of different ways (e.g. 'very
narrow', or 'can't visit at this time of day'), and be able to easily
see and list which road links have been tagged in each special way
separately. Given the need to be able to see and list them
separately, moving them into different layers seemed the most obvious
solution (as well as obviously rendering them differently).
