Once you have these it is really easy:

params.put(IndexedShapefileDataStoreFactory.CREATE_SPATIAL_INDEX.key,false);
params.put(IndexedShapefileDataStoreFactory.URLP, new URL("file://pathtoshapefile.shp"));

I found the ShpPlugin in the
net.refractions.udig.catalog.internal.shp
plugin.
Obviuously there is no one of the method you are using at the point 1)
So the previous message is still valid.
