Can you give us some more informations:

- It seems the client has a dual-core / dual-cpu / hyperthreading
machine - is your one equally equipped?

- Do you both have the same OS and Java version?

- Did you use the same large shapefiles for your local tests?

As the CPU usage seems to be 50% (of 2 cpus) in both cases, I think that
there's one thread using all CPU it gets, trying to render the
shapefile, and thus blocking the window updates.

I've seen screen update times of nearly a minute for complex shapefiles.

A little (off-topic) remark:

Please don't send such large .bmp files to mailing lists, it was about
3MB large, which grew to 4 MB to the base64 encoding used in email.

Converting the image to .png format reduces its size to 100kb (factor
30), without any loss of quality.
