Well, our /long/ term plan is to add the following to BIRT:

- spatial data source (geotools FeatureCollection from spatial query on FeatureSource), which can then be joined with other BIRT data sources
- spatial data series over data source
- spatial data grouping, so that you may render features on several maps, given some minimum zoom scale or some guiding geometry
- and of course map chart type

But, the above is a lot of work, especially since not all necessary extension points for the above are present in current BIRT, so you have to modify BIRT core bundles. Even worse, PDF is our primary output target and current PDF chart rendering inside BIRT is a kludge (it constructs a SVG document, which is then drawn to PDF through batik renderer). This is somewhat problematic since maps frequently involve large raster images. ;)

Our current solution (more or less) is to plug uDig rendering directly into pdf emitter, so that an image report item with special URL is considered to be a map. uDig renderer registers at the emitter through extension point. We'll develop a custom geographic map report item later on. I would be interested in what approach have you chosen.

Hi everyone I'm Gerhard Goosen, me and my colleagues did a design to use
BIRT to report on GEO/Schematic data. We are not currently working on the
project that will implement this design, due to other projects that needs
completion... but this has really interested me, so if you would be so kind
as to keep us in to loop of what you guys are doing/problems you are
encountering and such I would be very grateful... and of course if we get
any time to work with you on this it would be awesome. Really cool stuff!

Thanks. To provide some background, my current work involves using uDig as renderer and catalog platform for spatially-enhanced JCR repository. uDig will also be used for GIS reporting based on BIRT. Geographical maps within BIRT will be analogous to charts (connected to data series and sources).
