Thanks Paul,
I have updated the page in our online documentation:
Cheers,
Jody
Yes, a "shape file" is actually a collection of files, and the
application may open all of them...
The classic three files
.shp - shapes
.shx - shapes -> attributes index
.dbf - attributes
Basic metadata
.prj - projection
Open source extensions
.qix - quadtree spatial index
.fix - feature id index
.sld - style-layer-descriptor style xml object
ESRI extensions
.sbn - attribute index
.sbx - spatial index
.lyr - arcmap-only style object
.avl - arcview style object
Generally applications will *require* the classic three, and do better
or worse jobs depending on how many extras are available to lend a
helping hand

The dbase file is used but not required, it stores all the attribute
information, and the index (shx) is required by uDig for correct
functioning. uDig can use an existing .qix spatial index file as
well.
(It is the mapserver index file).
Hope that answers your question,
Partly... when I add a new file, shapefile in this case, does it then
load
the two file from the same path by default or is there some other
step to
perform?
