Answer is, you cannot get Google Earth imagery legally into uDig,
though you could write a tiling renderer that hit the GEarth tile
cache directly, in contravention of their terms of use.
There are a couple alternives:
- There are no restrictions on the LandSat tilecaches that WorldWind
uses, so a renderer that pulled those tiles in could be written
(richard?). This would go down to a 30m pixel resolution.
- There are some loose restrictions on the Microsoft livelocal tiles
(noncommercial only, I think) which go down to very high res in urban
areas. Again a renderer could be written that pulled these tiles
(richard?)

Hi uDiggers,
Here comes a forwarded mail from Manoj Thakur, who, for whatever
reason, chose to send this question to my personal mail address.

Matthias,
I am a very recent convert to PostGIS & PostgreSQL. I have been
playing around with uDig a bit. Is it possible to get Google Earth
(via
Google Maps..Satellite or Hybrid.or any other way) into the uDig
window ?
Through WMS or WFS, or any other way ?
My objective is to view my spatial data currently in SHP formats
vis a vis
Google Earth imagery and update my data. I have also considered
converting
my SHP into KML, editing the KML in GE and reverting back to SHP if
necessary. Given a choice I will prefer to load GE imagery into my GIS
Editor and make my changes and save.
Can you help ?
Thanks
Sincerely,
Manoj Thakur
