Selection not shown in Map (only table view)

This appears to be a graphics card specific issue (I have personally seen it on
slow laptops running 1.1.x - the solution was to hit refresh).

- if I select a line shapefile the selection is visible both in the map view
and in the tablw view
- if I select a point or a polygon layer the selection is visible only in the
table view

I would like to know if hitting refresh has any effect? If not this is a hard
to reproduce problem...
