My point is simple. If you ask the ImageIO plugin to export the image without 
specifying what exactly you want you have no control over what you get.

I don't even know if I can thrust that "Image is CMYK" message I get from my 
image processing software. Likely it just masks another problem. The four 
channels exported from "jpeg" format look like ...
  C - is more or less Blue
  M - no idea 
  Y -  no idea (clouds are dark!)
  K  - is actually Red
Looks as if someone tries to split a 3 byte number into four channels or 
something similar wicked.

Maybe the writer cannot cope with ARGB (images with transparency)? What happens 
if you try RGB as type of the BufferedImage? Just thinking loud.

I also noted that the written images don't get any useful EXIF information 
(like color space etc.) or at least my viewer doesn't show any for them.

Frankly, I have no idea of what's really going on.

P.S. Funny: Did you notice that the export wizard tells you the export file 
format in the wizard header format on the page BEFORE you choose it. Nice try 
of mind reading.
