GDAL missing dependency on linux

/home/craig/dev/jre1.6.0_11_gdal/lib/i386/libgdaljni.so: libnetcdf.so.4: cannot
open shared object file: No such file or directory
So we're missing libnetcdf.so.4. Perhaps this was available on the computer of
the developer that built the JRE? In which case perhaps it is a simple
dependency we need to install.
