status bar font unreadable

the font used by the srs button, scale text, and mouse position text in the
statusbar at the bottom of the map is too large for the space provided. The
text appears stretched.
1) Is it possible that a font is being used that may not always be present?
2) If there were a way to set the font on these components, it would alleviate
this issue.
