guess a build would fail if the javacSource and javacTarget
are set to 1.5 and some users checked in Java 6 only code (like @Override) -
that's why I posted the message above.

Are you talking about the platform or the community modules? but I agree,
the Eclipse IDE don't show you any problems at all, especially if the JRE is
set to 1.6, the plugin/feature product export would not fail. The headless
build does with the shared.properties mentioned above! But the values for
the two are already upgraded to 1.6

But I'm a bit confused about the jre in uDig home folder, after install its
1.6.0_17 (java -version). And how about udig for mac?

Long story short, 1.6 would be/is already great.
