Just an idea, but could Mike check, whether he downloaded the correct zip file ( properly he has choosen the 64 bit version and runs it on x86 system). Could anybody confirm? I haven't problems with the 1.2.2 version on ubuntu (for OSGeo-Live project) : http://udig.refractions.net/files/downloads/udig-1.2.2.linux.gtk.x86.zip
