I was able to try out some of that a couple weeks ago; do you have a specific 
server you are trying to hit? 

Please note that the kinds of "tile servers" out there change a lot; and uDig 
does not support everything (for example WMS-C is supported by WMTS is not).

I did specifically work with OSM tile server though; I did get a speed 
performance difference depending on the preference for storing tiles in a disk 
cache or not.
