MapViewer in a view does work
I have a subclass that makes it easy to have one
I have 2 clients that use it as the main map object in their application
also the tool tutorial uses the MapViewer in a view
and I am pretty sure I updated it to use my abstract mapviewer class
there is some discussion in the root of the plugin in a read me file
