I really like the approach. I guess it would make sense only if also the native imageio-ext parts get bundled into it. Without those it would be anyways necessary to create a custom jre to add imageio-ext. In that case we might even redirect the library path into one of the plugins and maybe be able to drop the shell scripts that start up udig right now. Apart of the imageio-ext issues, that should be considered, you definitely have my +1.
