So to report back. 

1) basic product export (i.e. something that can run)

mvn clean install

2) normal build (this builds a few more modules that our used by the SDK; but 
are not in the example uDig download)

This initially failed as it referenced a couple of the source plugins; which 
were removed earlier this week as they can now be generated. Removing those 
from plugin/pom.xml and feature/pom.xml has things building again.

I then got the following:
