Thanks for explaining - that helps a lot.

A couple of ideas (feel free to ignore):
- I wonder if we can use the existing coordinate area at the bottom of the 
screen. Like when you select a coordinate we can use that for editing. It would 
be similar to how it is used now where it provides dynamic feedback as you move 
the co-ordinate with the mouse?  
- The tool option area is available; you could make use of it for this purpose 
(it has the advantage of smoothly being available only when editing).
