Good evening.

Wel there are two schools of thought:

a) find and fix a bug:
pros: a nice way to get to know the community as people love seeing things fixed
cons: reading code you know has a problem is a hard way to learn

Suggestion:

The recently report https://jira.codehaus.org/browse/UDIG-1922 Export image NPE
looks like it is easy to reproduce, and NPE are often easy to find where the
problem is as they provide a stack trace.

b) implementing something
pros: you may have an idea, and because it is new you cannot break anything
cons: hard to come up with an idea, and hard to know where to start

Suggestion: We recently made a layer property page which allows you to mark the
layers you are not working and interacting with as as "background" layers (and
thus not editable, selectable). Make a toggle button on the layer view so it
filters out these layers, allowing the user to focus on the layers they are
working on. Can also make a toggle to filter out "map graphics".
