Thanks Mark: I also tested on win64 - working through the "Quickstart" that was very out of date.
The corrected copy is now available here: - http://udig.github.com/docs/user/Quickstart.html I was also able to share a couple "workbench" screen snaps with walkthrough 1. I took your advice on keeping the walkthroughs as individual pages; which are now all represented in the toc.xml file.
