Done! I have pushed the result up to that branch, and issued a pull request.
(It is safe to switch to that branch and try things out, it makes use of a GeoTools 9.0-M0-SNAPSHOT which I deployed, just so we don't have to ask everyone to build the geotools featurecollection_clean branch.
