It was a refractions project initially, the summer of code project added 
support for more tile servers. 

The code fetches tiles, turns them into grid coverages (and then runs the 
result through the normal geotools pipeline) - allowing it to support any 
projection (although sometimes with amazingly confusing results - for formats 
that are do not support transparency).
