You can choose between Metric, Imperial or Auto (which based on map crs, it chooses Metric or Imperial). But currently the distance tool chooses the display units, based on the amount of the measurement (km, m or mm). That logic is fine, but I'd need more fine control on the display unit, that's why I made a separate preference for overriding the default units.
