I think you have troubles with PHP4 because you try to use it as
apache module. I don't know why it does not work as a module. I
compile it into apache binary and it runs perfectly. You could try
this.

Search.cgi does not support boolean query language yet.

It is a very strange thing. I dont know why you have such speed
difference. May be it it your server hardware issue ?
