I have just experienced this problem as well. After installing into a VirtualBox image, the very first reboot after updating any necessary packages results in this same inability to boot.
I am also seemingly unable to get the "-s" or the "...milestone..." command to work after editing the boot commands. I've re-installed 3 times. Argh. This message posted from opensolaris.org
