   Do the following:

   Boot into command line mode and login.
   Execute:  startgui xfce  (or kde)
   Once you get the desktop type  CTRL+Atl+Backspace to kill the Xserver
   You will be back in command line.
   You can now edit the generated xorg.conf and repeat the startgui command.
