The keyword is SIMPLIFICATION.

They want to keep it simple, by reducing the number of distros, which is 
good. I remember questions like "What is the difference between SXCE, 
SXDE, opensolaris.org distributions". So here is the answer.

IPS is here, and there are various repositories /dev /support /extra 
/contrib. 

As I wrote yesterday, even GlassFish V3 will have it's updates through 
IPS. I presume that other software will follow the same way :)

Sun is doing efforts to simplify and leverage what has already done.
