nyargh ... what wasn't mentioned in the last post (because I didn't realise it was relevant) was that the alternate boot environment was encapsulated in Solaris Volume Manager metadevices ... luupgrade doesn't like performing an upgrade on systems in this state for some reason, although that isn't clear at all from the error messages ... What one needs to to is to mount the BE, modify vfstab to change the appropriate filesystem devices to their raw device equivalents, unmount it again and perform the luupgrade - as described (for VxVM, but similar issue) in section K of http://sunsolve.sun.com/search/document.do?assetkey=1-61-204332-1 ...
