The issue turned out to be one of 'Pilot Error' I'm afraid - when
upgrading the LDOMs admin software I inadvertently also removed portions
of the LDOM management daemon - ldmd was still installed but couldn't
find the libraries it needed in order to start and was choking ...

After some initial confusion with Sun Support, a second-level tech
gently pointed out the relevant errors in the log that I'd missed and
there were red faces all round ... installing the required packages,
re-applying the kernel patch and all was good again ...

Thanks to all who responded in any case ... :)

Regards,
Malcolm
