Wembley boss goes into hiding
By Isaac Mufumba
The Operation Wembley team leader in Jinja, Haruna Semakula, has gone into hiding to avoid possible arrest.
Jinja RDC Deo Kayongo said Tuesday that Haruna Semakula has been in hiding since Oct. 26.
Kayongo said that Semakula went into hiding in order to avoid arrest following a series of accusations of framing innocent people, extortion and torture.
Trouble for Semakula is said to have started with the death of an Operation Wembley suspect, Edirisa Maluku Omalugo, on Oct. 24.
Omalugo is said to have been tortured to death.
Kayongo, who also is chairman of the Jinja district security committee, said that relatives of the deceased immediately petitioned President Yoweri Museveni and Vice President Speciosa Kazibwe to investigate the Wembley team’s mode of operations.
Both the president and the vice president were on Oct. 25 in Kamuli to attend the ratification of the Busoga Charter.
The two leaders are said to have instructed Minister of State for Security Muruli Mukasa to handle the case.
Mukasa is said to have passed on the case to ISO chief Brig. Henry Tumukunde, who in turn directed the Jinja district ISO team to take up the matter.
Kayongo said that the ISO team raided the Wembley base in Nalufenya early on the morning of Oct. 26 and rounded up the squad, but missed Semakula.
Semakula is said to have left Jinja for Kampala the previous evening.
The RDC named the arrested Wembley officers as Lt. Charles Ogwal, Abbey Kitagenda, Abdul Wasswa and Edirisa Waiswa.
Others are Joseph Tumusiime, Ibrahim Kasendwa, Haruna Sekayi and two others whose identity could not be established.
The RDC revealed that the operatives were briefly held but later released pending further investigations into their case. They, however, remain unarmed.
