British envoy's pledge on neutrality
Britain will remain neutral during Kenya's General Election, High Commissioner Edward Clay said yesterday. He was speaking after opening a library for the Mathare Youth Sports Association at Eastleigh, Nairobi. "I've said it before, I'll say it again. We have no prejudices and no preferences. We stay out of this competition between parties and personalities. We are interested in the process," he said. The envoy supported the recommendation in the Draft Constitution that the finances and operations of political parties be supervised by the Electoral Commission. "It is very good. That's what the draft constitution suggests and this is why I like it. Of course, it must apply to all parties," he added. He affirmed that the British government will not fund any parties or individuals in the elections. The envoy's remarks come after recent criticism by President Moi and senior government officials that foreign missions accredited to Kenya were openly supporting the Opposition in the electoral battle. The library will offer free services to the Mathare Youth Sports Association members and improve access of the children in the area to reading materials. The Mulindwas
