A Tale of Two Girls
From Palestine

Over the last month their have been two stories which should tell us much about the way the American mainstream news media is behaving during this war for the liberation of Iraq, or, if you prefer, this pre-emptive strike on a foreign nation.
The first story concerns Jessica Lynch, 19, a US Army soldier from Palestine, West Virginia. As Reuters reported on April 1st. "A woman soldier captured in Iraq has been rescued by U.S.-led forces."
U.S. Brigadier General Vincent Brooks told reporters in a prepared statement: "Coalition forces have conducted a successful rescue mission of a U.S. Army prisoner of war held captive in Iraq. The soldier has been returned to a coalition-controlled area."
CNN reported that "Lynch suffered multiple gunshot wounds during the rescue. Her condition was said to be stable."
The story made the front pages of every newspaper in the United States and was the lead item on every radio and television network across the country.
The second story concerns Rachel Corrie, 23, of Washington DC, a student at Evergreen State College in Olympia, Washington. She was murdered in Palestine.
On March 16th. l'Agence France-Presse (AFP) the French worldwide newsagency reported that: "US peace activist Rachel Corrie was crushed to death by an Israeli army bulldozer in southern Gaza on Sunday March 16th. as she and other activists tried to prevent the destruction of Palestinian homes.
Fellow activist Joseph Smith, a 20-year-old student from Missouri, told AFP: "She was sitting in the path of the bulldozer. The bulldozer saw her and ran over her. She ended up completely underneath it. He absolutely knew she was there."
On March 18th. the British newspaper The Guardian, following on from its initial reporting of Rachel's murder, said: "Israeli forces fired teargas and stun grenades yesterday in an attempt to break up a memorial service for Rachel Corrie, the American peace activist killed by an army bulldozer in Gaza on Sunday. The Guardian added: "American peace activist Rachel Corrie was murdered by an Israeli bulldozer driver on 16 March 2003."
Other reports of Rachel's death were to be found in all of the European mainstream broadcast media and in every Arabic and Asian news outlet, as well as in the Australian and New Zealand radio, television and press.
However, in the United States, a search of the New York Times revealed just one story, by Greg Myre, hidden away in section A, page 3 column 1 of the March 17th. Late Edition-Final.
A search of the Washington Post came up with two articles and one letter. The first article detailing Rachel's death was to found in the Posts' March 17th. edition. Written by Molly Moore of the Washington Post Foreign Service, the report was tucked away on page A15 of section A.
The second article, reproducing one of Rachel's e-mails, was published on March 30th. on page B3 of the Outlook section.
The letter, published in the March 22nd edition of the Post, on page A15 of section B, had this to say:
"It was greatly disappointing to see the Rachel Corrie story buried on Page A15. What page would your paper have given the story if she had been deliberately run over by an Iraqi bulldozer".
Incidentally, the murder of Rachel was widely reported and commented on across every independent news website throughout the world, with RENSE.COM reproducing at least ten different articles and opinions. Enough said.
