Surgeons currently in Luwero district to offer free surgical services have been overwhelmed by the number of patients who are close to 3,000.The President of the Surgeons Association of Uganda, Dr Fualal Jane Adhuku yesterday said they had by Tuesday booked 800 cases in the five operation centres of Kasana, Kalagala, Kiwoko, Nakaseke, and Ngoma. She said that on the first day, 100 patients were operated on. Dr Adhuku said hundreds of other unbooked patients were still streaming to the health units for free treatment. She revealed that at Kiwoko Hospital alone, about 200 patients had been booked but about 150 others could be seen in the hospital compound pleading for consideration. The area Member of Parliament and minister of Energy and Mineral Development, Syda Bbumba told The Monitor yesterday that some patients had travelled 20kms to reach the hospital. "Most of them have severe cases which need to be attended to without fail," she said. Ms Bbumba said one of the patients, a young boy, had a swollen penis which needed urgent attention. Dr Adhuku said they lacked adequate resources to cater for the swelling number of patients. She said her team was doing voluntary work. The Minister of Health Jim Muhwezi said arrangements would be made to help the doctors attend to all the patients. The exercise ends tomorrow.
