Clergy Want Military Training For All

By Nathan Etengu
RELIGIOUS leaders from the Teso region have appealed to the Government to make it mandatory for all able-bodied citizens to undergo military training for national defence.

They said such skills were necessary in situations of war, as was the case with the recent invasion of Teso by the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA) rebels. “The climate in Uganda necessitates that every Ugandan from the age of 18 years and above should undergo military science training.

“We priests should also undergo the same training,” said the Rev. John Erwau of the Church of Uganda, Soroti Diocese.

He was speaking at a consultative meeting reviewing the provision of social services to the people displaced by the LRA incursions.

The meeting, called by the state minister for health, Capt. Mike Mukula, was attended by more than 50 clergymen and chaired by the bishop of Soroti Diocese, the Rt. Rev. Charles Obaikol.

Erwau said, “Let Parliament discuss it and pass it into law.

“The same laws are practiced in other developed countries including Israel.”
