Lawmakers have asked President Yoweri Museveni to live within the means of the country.

The MPs are unhappy that State House has spent Shs 640 million on First Lady Janet Museveni's newly acquired office block yet there is no residence for the vice president.

“We should recommend that they provide money for either the purchase or construction of the vice president’s residence,” said Samia Bugwe North MP Aggrey Awori during a meeting of the Presidential and Foreign Affairs Committee at Parliament yesterday.

The committee was scheduled to meet the Minister of State for Finance, Mr Mwesigwa Rukutana, but he sought adjournment to attend another meeting presided over by the Speaker, Mr Edward Ssekandi.

He had been invited to explain the status of Uganda’s properties abroad, which are managed by Uganda Property Holdings.

The MPs are unhappy that State House keeps budgeting for the partial construction of Entebbe State House and later uses the money to meet other expenditure.

Committee chairwoman Salaamu Musumba (Bugabula South) said that for the last five years money has been allocated toward the construction but no tangible results have been realised.

Mr Awori demanded that there must be a cut-off point at which the taxpayer could finance the president’s family.

He said Museveni’s two married daughters have each acquired a new, strong Mercedes Benz 618, which costs Shs 200 million.
