Swahili is the best national language

I disagree with Mr Kintu Nyago's view in The Monitor, August 2 when he says that Swahili should go side by side with Luganda as national languages. I think Swahili should go side by side with English because it is a unifying language of tribes of Uganda.

It is a language used in the Uganda Police, Prisons and Army. It can also be easily picked.

It is not true that former President Idi Amin imposed Swahili on Ugandans. The majority of delegates to the Consultative Council of all districts held in 1974 proposed Swahili to be the second official language.

It is also not true that the robbers (kondo) used Swahili. If Swahili is a foreign language in Uganda, is it not true that Luganda is a foreign language in eastern, northern and western regions?

If you cannot speak Ateso, why would you force me to speak Luganda? I appeal to the Uganda Constitution Review Commission not to be misled. In order to avoid language chaos, let us adopt Swahili and everybody will rush to learn it.

Two-term limit good for MPs

There is a lot of debate going on as to whether the President should be given a third term through a constitutional amendment.

Critics of the third term project have argued that it will set a bad precedent for future presidents, and that other able Ugandans are being denied the chance to rule their country. The fact is, President Yoweri Museveni is still strong, and Ugandans still love him, although his rate of popularity is declining.

To my surprise, there are lawmakers who have been in Parliament since NRC days and others have served two or more terms. Why can't they also leave the stage for others to perform?

I recommend that MPs too, be restricted by term limits. I do support the two term limit for the President.
