The subject of this article is to winnow facts from irrealism.
I will start by trying to do a short study of Luwero population configuration. Baganda predominantly inhabits Luwero. Then Baralo (or offspring of Baganda, Bahima and Baruli), Baruli, Badama and small groups of Ja-Luo and some people from neighbouring district of Lira and Busoga who moved to this region primary due to economic and social reasons. E.g. cattle keeping in case of Baralo mainly in Buruli region, Ja-luo, Badama in fishing villages around Lake Kyoga and intermarriages which are basically social structures.
Then as all know, there are small groups of Nubian settlements in Bombo and this particular group is a result of Uganda’s colonial past and partly augmented with Amin’s political military combinatory. This group was decimated socially, economically and politically in the war that saw Amin moved from power.
All in all Baganda is he majority population here.
The above population configuration and structure give Luwero a rather peculiar political structure. And in recent history of civil conflict –there is an absolute need for the people of Uganda, particularly politicians and journalist to know the facts about Luwero between 1980 – 86.
Who killed whom in Luwero?
This question can’t be answered without asking: -
(1). Which people supported Uganda Peoples Congress (UPC) and who supported the Democractic party (DP), the major political party contestants in 1980 election , that was basis of imagined support for launching National (?) resistance movement Bush war in Luwero ?
Given to the fact that the predominant population in Luwero is Baganda and to some extent Baruli and Baralo on the northern fringes, it will be logically clear that Baganda and Baruli where the predominant supporters of DP as well as UPC in Luwero. Yet still as it were, in Uganda’s political structures impregnated with religious factors - the Protestants and Catholics.
Looking at past voting patterns in this region, from 1962 and beyond (mid 1980-90s) anyone can prove this fact. But also the subsequent contestants in parliamentary elections and LC will give proof to this fact.
The Myth implanted in Luwero- as in the central region
If one has ever been close to NRA they sung songs (military songs) in swahili which were directly demonising the Anyanya- the Anyanya are small tribes in Central and Southern Sudan. Brought to Uganda as colonial expeditionary forces, by marauding British officers in their incursion into Uganda northern frontier. Some of them make up the Nubian community in Bombo, which as I said above were decimated in 1978-79 war socially, politically, and economically. They have never recovered and possibly will never will without the economic base i.e. petty trade and the army.
Was then NRA and the population in Luwero fighting Anyanya’s in Luwero as depicted in NRA rebel war songs sung by the Baganda youth then in Luwero?
The answer is and absolute NO.
Who were the NRA fighting then in Luwero?
The Baganda -Banyankole/Bakiga Master -slave war:
The total decimation of Luwero population socially and economically is ground on the above myth. That is to say, UPC whom were devilishly TURNED INTO the Anyanya MURDERING Baganda in Luwero. INSTEAD of Baganda under the leadership of their masters the Banyakole/Bakiga so-called University students turned intellectual revolutionaries murdering the Baganda in Luwero.
The underlying structure is the SOCIO- PSYCHOLOGICAL of perversion of truth to serve own political ends, which clearly was not in the service of Luwero people. Mapped and trigged by NRM political propaganda i.e. the IGNORANT PEASANTRY in Luwero, and PEOPLES ARMY (or personal army) turned the population against itself in a thoroughly well designed orgy of politically inspired killing.
In essence the ignorant peasantry of Luwero were liberating themselves from an imaginary Anyanya – were they? UPC support structures in Luwero were not in the slightest imagination Nubians or Anyanya but people of Luwero who were and are still Baganda, Baralo and Baruli predominantly.
Then from what were the Baganda, Baralo and Baruli being liberating from during the NRM war in Luwero?
Apart from militia ambushes on buses and trucks moving soldiers, reminiscent of the Luwero war, who were the people who were killed – of COURSE PEOPLE IN Luwero.
Who are they?
The Baganda, Baralo and Baruli who in turn lost economically in form of cattle used to serve meals for NRM bush warriors, cotton and coffee factories and socially homes which were totally shuttled and equally destroyed by both forces.
Proof:
a. The majority names of people or families who died in Luwero few are given who are non-residents of Luwero. NRM enemy force excluded, which in fact is a very small number, killed in the entire conflict.
b. The Anyanya by no means were involved in the war in Luwero on the contrary. Government forces in 1980-86 were not Anyanyas. THEN HOW COULD BAGANDA BELIEVE THAT THE ANYANYA WERE KILLING THEM. Were they?
c. The great looses on UPC side were UPC Luwero based supporters – the Baganda, Baruli and to some extent Baralo offered on the alter power ego by DP then an ally for NRM now turned enemy 2003!
UPC in its fight against NRA rebels used the Baganda youth under the leadership of yet still some Banyankole/bakiga and Banyarwanda UPC supporters- precisely under the same structures as NRA. For UPC foot soldiers doing the dirty work, were particularly Ugandans from all over the country and for NRM Baganda peasants doing the dirty work of killing off non – NRA and DP supporters i.e. those labelled the ANYANYA.
If were go by the trend in the war effort – the Acoli in government forces pulled out- the Langi remaining which prompted the rapid recruitment of Karamoja youth! These were not Anyanya. UPC secret army and spying structure was lead predominately Basoga, Baganda, Banyankole, Bakiga
Proof: besides the good number of people from Lango who died in Luwero as soldiers, there is even a larger number of Baganda and a small portion of Banyakole/Bakiga who were killed on the side of UPC government forces. This is not a secret by a fact that can be proved from the officers killed here.
What I am showing is a very well known so-called Marxist military ideology even though Marx NEVER EVER IN HIS TEXT I HAVE READ SO FAR proposed murdering of innocent people. This structure was streamlined by the Leninist and then Mao Tse Tung and then Che G etc.
In essence, as the subsequent paragraphs shows there is no connection between UPC, DP 1980 electoral contest and Marxist thinking other than those intellectuals egoistically and blindly pursing an ideology for the own ends.
Medic-care, Education, transport, agriculture, crime all have seen worse days. On the other side a click of the so-called University students turned intellectual revolutionaries and their equally peasantry Baganda not killed, and now struggling for their status - HAVE GAINED ENORMOUSLY.
Rewarded in other words!
Today, Luwero is worse off than it had ever been! Villages have died out, the economy gone and majority youth NOT DEAD, ravaging in poverty and misery. The old left on their own are just CANDLES IN THE WIND slowly dying away- FILLED with soul and grief of seeing their own offerings dying out first.
Luwero is a ghost district one just have to compare waht Luwer was in the 70’s and what it is today, from Kiwoko, Nakeseke, the little bombed shell of resident doted all over Luwero.
There are no hospitals, once roads are now village paths, once human settle bushes doted with skulls staring brunk in the innocent past!
THE BAGANDA , BARULI AND BARALO PEASANTS OF LUWERO ARE FAR OFF TODAY THAN THEY HAVE EVER BEEN in the history of this region, from Nabiswera to Kawanda.
End of history.
