--- Begin Message ---Ugandan music is slowly becoming available in the diaspora. However, the supply of high quality music that is professionally recorded is intermittent, especially for traditional music. High quality Afrigo CDs are available in Tower Records (USA & UK), Amazon, Rhino Records, etc. There are 2 high qaulity traditional CDs, one by Muyinda and the other produced by namesake in Sweden, by Nandujja and her group, The Planets. The latter (Emmeeme) is not available in USA, that I know of, but I can tell you that it is very good. In fact, a version of some of the songs are available on cassette. Muyinda's CD was recorded in situ, out in the open and in one of the songs a kid can be heard in the background calling out to his mate. Otherwise it is an excellent (near studio quality) recording. I do have a few (5?) cassettes (originals) of traditional music that I can dig up and sell to anyone on a first come first served basis. But I'd have to check them against my personal collection (150+ scattered around ...) to make sure I have them before giving them up. I do not make copies, except for my own personal use (too few hours in a day!). However others probably do. Another very good CD is Royal Court Music from Uganda by various artists recorded in 1950-1952. One remarkable thing about this CD is that it is a field recording and has a good write up. Another remarkable thing is that you can it contains a recording of the voice of the Late Omukama of Bunyoro-Kitara. Samite of Uganda also has excellent CD, which are also excellent for kids. Here are blurbs on some CDs. I'll continue with Ssempeke's music and perhaps add some kadongokamu music next time. ssemakula ======== Pearl Of Africa Reborn by Samite Of Uganda Track Listing: 1. It's rare that African field recordings -- or any recordings, for that matter -- have this much fire, verve, and urgency. These field recordings by Hugh Tracey in 1950 and 1952 document the playing of royal instruments, most of which have been destroyed when Prime Minister Obote "fell on the traditional monarchies of Uganda" in 1966 (according to the liner notes on the back cover). This collection of recordings is definitely not for everyone. The music had a tendency to be a little rough and extremely frenetic, constantly surging forward with remarkable intensity. Field recordings are definitely not for everyone, and within this genre, this recording is certainly unique. However, if this description piques your interest, I would not hesitate in checking this out. ======== This CD is very good, if you are into Kiganda traditional music and it may be available from Amazon and/or Towe Records, although it is out of print.
