Show me a prostitute and I will show you a polygamist

A strong advocate of commercialised sex, me? Guilty as charged and I want to share a few experiences some of which Hussein Kiingi a student of Financial Economics at the University of East London elaborated so well in his piece Right to choose does not occur in sex work, (The Monitor December 9).

But first I want to ask why some people are so greedy and think of others especially us of the female species as lesser mortals.

While arguing against commercialising prostitution, Hussein says prostitutes are constantly exposed to disease, drugs and alcohol, homelessness, incarceration, mental illness, malnutrition, murder, physical abuse, sexual abuse, sleep deprivation, torture and verbal harassment.

They are isolated from the mainstream society. There was a long list of all kinds of effects and for each description that Hussein had, I saw a wife, a co-wife, wife number one, two or three or indeed mukyala mukulu or mukyala muto. I saw many women who are married to one man in polygamy.

I don’t want to be philosophical about some things. I know that prostitution is the same thing as polygamy.

In polygamy a man sleeps with many women, in prostitution, a woman sleeps with many men. It is one human being having sex with many human beings whenever they wish to.

Many men like Hussein either because of their faith or their greed will put a lot of financial economics into the evils of prostitution and will spin all kinds of advantages for polygamy.

What do people mean when they say it is okay for a man to marry many women as long as they can look after them? It means he has to pay to keep them.

Same thing for the women. They are buying their financial security, shelter, home etc with sex.

Come to think of it, all married women are prostitutes. If a man doesn’t provide school fees, you will drag him to FIDA. If he abandons his home for another woman, you will commit suicide or murder. If he hangs out late, you won’t sleep.

Tell me, what is wrong with a woman who has officially declared she wants all her
emoluments in cash? She is much better than a housewife. She bargains, has her own rules and can decide not to sell at all.

I’m a human being and want to be respected as such. I hate situations that dictate different rules for men or women. Some people even argue that by marrying many women, men are helping them because the men are very scarce.

Then I think of all the homosexuals, the men of honour who have died in battle fields, those who have taken it upon themselves to marry many women for their own good and have passed on HIV/Aids from one woman to another and another and wiped out a generation. Who are they kidding?

I don’t want anybody to get me wrong, I know the sister species who specialise in sexing up married men and who don’t give a damn what number of a wife they are, have the right to marry the man they want.

I also know men who don’t care that a woman is married. They want to be one of the husbands, which is also okay. What is not okay is for sections of society to laugh at such men and hail such women.

Like polygamy, prostitution can be made safe and the sistas protected from those that always want to exploit them. If you want to fight prostitution, start with polygamy.
