Kampala Japan government has donated Shs 7 billion to the Ministry of Energy to extend electric power from Soroti to Katawi. The Japanese ambassador, Mr Nobuaki Ito announced the donation while meeting the Minister of Energy and Mineral Development, Ms Syda Bumba at Embassy House on Thursday

"We ask the government to properly utilise the money since it is part of Japan's tax collections," Ito said. The funds will be channeled through the Japanese International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and electrification will start this year.Ito said that the power line is to improve the area's economic performance by boosting the processing industries in the area.

"Japanese government will continue to work with the Uganda government to explore more investment opportunities," the ambassador said.He asked local authorities to expand the tax base by sensitising local on about the importance of paying taxes."We don't want any middleman in Katakwi project in order to ensure that the targeted standards are realised," he said.Bbumba said that the 50-km power line will help create more jobs in the area.

The Executive Director for Uganda Investment Authority, Dr Maggie Kigozi said that the electrification would reduce the costs of production in the area and encourage more investments like grain milling.

"With power processing mills shall cut their expenditure on fuel and generators," she said.Katakwi is on agricultural region, producing cotton, millet and other cereal crops.

"The lie can be maintained only for such time as the State can shield the people from the political, economic and/or military consequences of the lie. It thus becomes vitally important for the State to use all of its powers to repress dissent, for the truth is the mortal enemy of the lie, and thus by extension, the truth becomes the greatest enemy of the state."
