KAMPALA - As the country grapples with the question on whether to change the Constitution to allow President Museveni to vie for office after the expiry of his term in 2006, a national opinion poll shows that over half of Ugandans want the move resisted at all costs.
Some 53.6 percent of Ugandans think that Mr Museveni, for all his achievements and ills, should respect the Constitution and leave office after two decades in power. The year-end survey was commissioned by The Monitor and conducted by premier East African research firm, Strategic Public Relations & Research Ltd. The researchers interviewed 1,900 adult Ugandans in all the regions of the country. Face-to-face interviews using pre-coded questionnaires with closed and open-ended questions were conducted over a four-day period. The survey interviewed 30.5 percent of respondents in the Central region; 23.5 percent in Eastern; 28.8 percent in Western and 17.2 percent in the Northern region. Some 84.8 percent of those interviewed were registered voters while the remaining 15.2 percent had not registered to vote in spite of the fact that they had attained the voting age. A majority of those interviewed (22.3 percent) were in the age group 26 - 30 years. |
