LIRA: REBELS ATTACK MARKET, AT LEAST 20 PEOPLE DEAD
General,ÂBrief

Rebels of the self-styled LRA (Lordâs Resistance Army) killed at least 20 people in north Uganda this morning, MISNA sources have said. At least 60 âOlumâ (as the LRA rebels are called in the Acholi language) assaulted the village of Igwenya, 35 kilometres east of Lira, at around midday. The village hosts a small daily market, which draws people from nearby villages. For this reason, Igwenya was busy with people at the time of the attack. According to early reports, the rebels slaughtered their victims without firing a shot. The rebels have used the tactic of attacking with axes and machetes in recent months to avoid being caught by the Ugandan army patrols, which have been stepped up in the at-risk area. The rebels led by Joseph Kony have tormented the northern districts in Uganda since 1986; in almost 18 years of terror they have killed and tortured tens of thousands of people (at least 100,000 dead), abducted more than 20,000 children (reduced to slavery or forced to serve in the guerrilla) and displaced more than 1 million people from their homes.

"The lie can be maintained only for such time as the State can shield the people from the political, economic and/or military consequences of the lie. It thus becomes vitally important for the State to use all of its powers to repress dissent, for the truth is the mortal enemy of the lie, and thus by extension, the truth becomes the greatest enemy of the state."

- Dr. Joseph M. Goebbels - Hitler's propaganda minister
