COUNTRIES IN EAST AFRICA CREATE RAPID INTERVENTION FORCE
The countries of East Africa have agreed to set up a regional rapid intervention force to serve in peacekeeping operations and anti-terrorism campaigns.
The Chiefs of Staff of Uganda, Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania, Comoros Islands, Somalia, Ethiopia, Eritrea and Madagascar reached the accord yesterday following seven days of discussions in Jinja, around 80 kilometres east of the Kampala, capital of Uganda. The respective defence ministers must now ratify the decision officially; to this end, they are expected to meet in Addis Ababa, capital of Ethiopia and headquarters of the African Union (AU), in April.
The brigade, comprising 4,000 men and due to be operative as of next year, is the first of five multinational contingents that will together make up the continental rapid intervention force foreseen by the AU, but which is not expected to get off the ground before 2010. Some commentators see the east African brigade as a response to recent requests from the international community (with Washington in the lead) for multilateral military co-operation in the region.
