Uganda rebel attack 'kills 170'

An attack by "rebels" in northern Uganda is reported to have left at least 170 people dead.

Rebels from the Lord's Resistance Army attacked and then burned down a camp for displaced civilians north of Lira town, witnesses said. The attack comes less than three weeks after another devastating rebel raid in which more than 40 civilians died. The LRA rebels, who have no clear political agenda, have been terrorising north Uganda for the past 18 years.

"The lie can be maintained only for such time as the State can shield the people from the political, economic and/or military consequences of the lie. It thus becomes vitally important for the State to use all of its powers to repress dissent, for the truth is the mortal enemy of the lie, and thus by extension, the truth becomes the greatest enemy of the state."

- Dr. Joseph M. Goebbels - Hitler's propaganda minister
