GERMANY is critically following the political transition process in Uganda, a visiting
MP Peter Weiss told the Speaker of Parliament, Edward Ssekandi, yesterday.
"We are also looking at the political reform process with great interest. When do you
hope to go to full multiparty politics?" he asked.
Weiss, flanked by German ambassador Alexander Muhlen and development adviser Dr.
Volker Riehl, decried the plight of the people in northern Uganda.
"We have seen what the conflict is like and the suffering of the people. What
contribution do you think we can make to help bring peace to these people? There is no
more development there. It is completely retarded," he said.
Weiss, a member of the committee for development and economic cooperation in the
German Parliament, is on a fact-finding mission on the Lord's Resistance Army (LRA)
insurgency.
The delegation visited northern Uganda on Monday.
Ssekandi briefed the delegation on the Government's efforts to end the war and
alleviate the suffering of the people in the north and northeast.
"As government, we are interested in seeing the end of this conflict and we are doing
everything possible to ensure that the people return to normal life," he said.
Ssekandi said the plight of children was particularly disturbing and appealed to
whoever was able to help.

On the transition to multipartyism, he said it was a government decision to go
multipartyism.
Weiss pledged continued assistance to the Government as it worked towards achieving
its development goals. "We expect to assist you in reducing the level of poverty by
2015," he said.
