KAMPALA - Tingey MP Mr Steven Chebrot yesterday told off the chairman of the Court Marshal, Lt. Gen. Elly Tumwine, that he is not qualified to head the court. Chebrot, while addressing a news conference at Parliament yesterday, said Tumwine is just an artist whose credentials are to draw pictures and design clothes and not to make judicious decisions. He said they were together at the university and he is an artist by profession. Chebrot emphasised that Tumwine was not fit to head the Court Marshal and that is why he detained journalists who were doing their work. Six journalists from The Monitor and The New Vision newspapers were last week detained at the Makindye Court Marshal over alleged contempt of court without formally charging them. The journalists included The New Visions Editor-in- Chief, Mr William Pike, and The Monitors Managing Editor, Mr John Baptist Wasswa. Let government review the Court Marshal so that it is constituted of people with legal minds. I disagree with the idea of an artist chairing the Court Marshal and arresting senior people who have served this nation for so long, Chebrot said. Chebrot in the same press conference said government has no right to stop political parties from soliciting resources from donors. |
